Somehow, having been woefully intermittent with my previous blog, I want to start afresh. And starting again means I don’t need to try to import old posts from blogger.
I temporarily called this blog ‘Graculus’, and I may return to it again. He was the name of the ‘great green bird’ from Noggin the Nog by the wonderful Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin (see also here). He was a great counsellor to Noggin, King of the Nogs through all his adventures, as well as being a great friend. He looked very much like a cormorant, except green, though ‘graculus’ is Latin for jackdaw. That is curious too, since the Latin/scientific name for a jackdaw is Corvus monedula, while an Alpine chough is Pyrrhocorax graculus. Neither of which are green. Anyway, I loved Noggin the Nog as a child and I remember Graculus giving his friend the king some sage observations about the world. Which is what I aspire to, though some would say there is perhaps a more natural link to Olaf to Lofty. But maybe I’m more jackdawish, picking up little bits and pieces and taking them back to my nest.
