Steve Coogan's desire for an authentic story

Having republished my Film & Bible Blog article on Philomena a couple of days ago, I've just come across this quote from Steve Coogan in my notebook:

What motivated me wasn't just that I wanted to give myself a break from the Alan Partridge of it all. It was also because I wanted to tell an authentic story and I thought, in postmodernism everything had to be laced with irony but it was really annoying me. And I wanted to do something authentic and simple and sincere.

From Front Row, BBC Radio 4, 16 January 2014.
